SOR took the NSW Government to the Supreme Court of NSW to stop it from closing the Newcastle Rail Line on Boxing Day 2014, selling the rails for scrap metal and building on the land. The judge ruled it illegal for the Government or its agencies to “rip up the rail line,” which would contravene the Transport Administration Act S 99A
Despite this ruling on Christmas Eve the Baird Government has gone ahead with its plans
- Shut down all train services between Hamilton and Newcastle
- Poured road base over the line to create crossings
- Removed the overhead wiring which had powered electric trains
- Removed boom gates at Stewart Ave and Merewether Streets
- Closed the Railway Street crossing
Gladys Berejiklian as Transport Minister tried to get around the law by “vesting” the ownership of the rail line to HDC – This underhand trick did not work.
NOW URBAN GROWTH COMES TO NEWCASTLE TO “CONSULT” ON THE “DISUSED CORRIDOR” WITH DIRECT ORDERS FROM THE PREMIER
UG is a development agency of the NSW Government which has displayed intentions to build large structures on the Newcastle Rail Line as well as in the Mall / East Newcastle.
DON’T FALL FOR THIS CON JOB! THIS IS A TRICK! THEY WANT TO SAY THEY HAVE COMMUNITY AGREEMENT TO KEEP TRAINS OFF THE CORRIDOR SO THEY CAN BUILD ON IT.
Choices being put to the people do not include ANY FORM OF TRANSPORT. A choice of trains of any sort is disallowed, including TramTrains, diesel or high floor trams. None.
The community was not CONSULTED before removing train services direct to Newcastle. MAKE YOUR CHOICE FOR TRAINS
If you take part in any of the Urban Growth “engagement” processes be aware you CAN CHOOSE other than the 4 pretty pictures with playgrounds & fountains which will actually include buildings to 20 storeys and higher. Reject all 4 of these “CHOICES.”
The plan is for a “disused” corridor. Is it illegal for this process to be occurring? The Court judgment based on the Transport Administration Act says it cannot be “closed.”
Put in your own submission which could bring back trains. Make creative suggestions for access over or under the line. It is said plans for the Wickham Terminus include a tunnel under Stewart Ave. This could be done for car access without removing train services. Open Civic area WITH trains. There are many possibilities. Provide your ideas, not theirs.
COST HAS BEEN A LIMITING FACTOR BUT THE PORT MONEY EXISTS & IS BEING WASTED ON RUNNING BUSES & BUILDING A COW SHED TERMINUS AT WICKHAM– A SECOND RATE OPTION TO ALLOW DEVELOPMENT.
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT – MAKE YOUR CHOICE THE BEST!
CONSULTATION CON by URBAN GROWTH
A VOTE FOR ANY OF THE 4 CONCEPT PLANS IS A VOTE FOR NO RAIL SERVICES.
It will be counted as support for development on the rail corridor, even if you vote for concept 1 (the Greenway.)
DON’T FALL FOR THIS LATEST DEVICE.
They want to say they have community agreement to keep trains permanently off the Newcastle Line so they can build large buildings on it. Don’t let them deceive you. All four options have buildings on the rail line. Get trains back! Don’t help them derail Newcastle.
IF YOU DON’T WANT NEWCASTLE STATION TO BE A FISH MARKET, SAY NO TO URBAN GROWTH CHOICES.
Do you want trains to terminate at Wickham so you can hike down the road to a bus?
WILL NEWCASTLE BENEFIT FROM THE PORT SALE MONEY?
