Save Our Rail has them in the bag and is off to catch the train with 10,000 signatures on a petition for presentation to the NSW Parliament.
SOR representatives will carry the signatures to Sonia Hornery, Member for Wallsend at Parliament House on Wednesday, 13/11/13 at 11.30 a.m.
With her to receive the petitions will be Clayton Barr, MP for Cessnock and Linda Burney, Deputy Leader of the Opposition. “We are hoping Opposition leader John Robertson and Penny Sharpe will also welcome us as Opposition spokesperson for Transport”, said Joan Dawson, Save Our Rail President.
The commitment of the community in putting signatures and addresses in writing to support retention and improvement of the rail line into Newcastle is a clear indication of the widespread trust in Save Our Rail to represent their interests.
“This reinforces our position as a stakeholder in transport planning and proves that we cannot be referred to as a “minority group”.
“Our numbers exceed the Property Council, HDC, Hunter Business Chamber and all the other anti-rail groups combined.” Joan Dawson commented.
Save Our Rail is well and truly a heavyweight player in the community commanding wide respect over a long period of time. This has been gained through their diligence in debating issues using sound research and in establishing and presenting community needs professionally.
Save Our Rail is the first Hunter Valley community organisation known to have presented a petition of more than 10,000 signatures.
“It is an indication that this region has a heart and that people realise the importance of rail to business” said Bobbie Antonic, Newcastle retailer. “All aboard the 7.18 train to set the Government right on this issue.” she added, “Or just come and wave us off!”
