Save Our Rail is planning to celebrate rail services with a great day out at Newcastle Foreshore Park. “RAILFEST” will be on Sunday 20th October 2013 with all sorts of fun activities – face painting, music, entertainment and a sausage sizzle. Groups are invited to be part of our festival and can contact Bobbie on 0434 919 060 or Kim on 0407 919 807. All are welcome for a day of family fun, so come and join us.
Save Our Rail has kept trains running into Newcastle over a period of 20 years, despite repeated attempts to have the line truncated at various locations. Developer groups have an interest in the land occupied by the rail line because it is the ONLY land in Newcastle not undermined by old coal workings. This means it is the most valuable land in the city. The O’Farrell Government has plans to replace the existing heavy rail line with “light rail”, supposedly to “revitalise” Newcastle. This makes no sense as the current provision is an intercity service linking the cities of Newcastle, Sydney, Maitland, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter communities to Scone and Dungog with the capacity and capability for extension to Tamworth and Taree. It BRINGS people to Newcastle. A light rail service would only provide transport around a limited area within Newcastle because it does not have a long haul capability.
Cutting the line to replace with light rail would be:
- a huge waste of public funding
- cause inconvenience (especially to the disabled) & delay to all passengers to Newcastle
- cause loss of public transport patronage therefore more car use, traffic problems
- cause loss of tourism, devalue land in Newcastle, disadvantage Newcastle
- disadvantage Hunter region communities commercially & socially
- cause loss of link with major city, disconnect youth from beach
SAVE OUR RAIL HAS SEEN NO EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE IDEA THAT CUTTING THE RAIL WILL CAUSE “REVITALISATION.” WE BELIEVE IT WILL HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT.
